Math literacy is important for all students, and particularly difficult for some students because of Language issues, multistep problems and problem solving struggles with real-world problem. I work with students who have learning disabilities and cross-categorical disabilities in a Math Fundamentals class. In addition, I work with hearing impaired students- some of which struggle with Mathematical concepts.
Lesson ExamplesAttached are lesson examples for an Algebra Readiness class (Fundamentals class before Pre-Algebra)-more on my other computer.. will add soonThe lessons were modified from examples in the fundamentals text and other sources, practice for gradual release lessons weren't specifically used from the book because the info. needed to be broken down further- too many skills were mixed together.
http://www.coolmath.comhttp://www.quia.com (a variety of games teachers have created that focus on a particular concept- I used it for verbal sentences/figuring out how to write the equation given a verbal sentence, one step equation games, and two step equation games)http://www.math-aides.com (I used this site for a variety of activities that I used for basic Math concepts, some of the activities I combined so there weren't too many/but enough examples of each objective) I started using this site for ideas to integrate with the fundamentals curriculum for writing numbers/number translations, place value charts, multiplication charts ... Increased Visual Literacy Tools http://myplace.frontier.com (Mathematics Models that display basic operations, visualizing number relationships, communicating Mathematics, odd and even numbers, fraction concepts... etc.) In addition to modeling concepts with base ten blocks and such manipulatives, this site provided good models about how certain concepts are formed
Math Manipulative Games- One and Two step Equations
I created cards for two step equations and two step equations with the distributive property for a manipulative activity1st card- the full equation (ex. 2x + 4= 14) 2nd card- shows the first step, moving the addition or subtraction part of the equation (ex. 2x =10) 3rd card- shows the second step, getting x alone (ex. x=5) -There are many equations with the steps on different cards, the cards are mixed up, and students need to match the appropriate steps with the correct equation *The same type of manipulative activity was set up for distributive property. (ex. 2(x +4) =16 -In this situation there are four steps rather than 3
